Play Therapy

'Play is not a luxury. It is a necessity.'

Kay Redfield-Jamison

Play is the foundation for our development as human beings.

Through it, we learn about ourselves and our relationship to others and the world.

Play therapy is an effective and practical form of psychotherapy that provides a safe and non-threatening setting for children and older clients to experience the crucial building blocks of social connection, sensory and imaginative exploration and physical confidence.

Techniques of play therapy may be used for all ages, especially for those whose life circumstances have prevented sufficient positive and free play in early childhood.

Play therapists provide a contained environment for self-directed and shared play activities through offering a range of toys, creative materials and opportunities to engage in movement and imaginative games.

The therapist supports the child or older client to explore, investigate and take the essential steps of developmental play or to experience play in a new and restoring way.

The time allowed for concentration and unhurried playful discovery is restful and helps to calm the nervous system and regulate emotions. This is particularly valuable for clients who have suffered from illness or traumatic life circumstances. The attuned response of the therapist to the observations and reflections of the child or older client during play, confirms the value of their inner world and affirms their sense of self.

The experience of being heard and understood during sessions whilst practising skills of communication, creativity and decision making, builds confidence and helps clients to relate more effectively with others in their everyday lives.
